This year marks the 80th anniversary of Corporal Guy G. Wright’s liberation from a Japanese prisoner of war camp. “Bataan – Corregidor – Prisoner of War” details how he ended up there. In his telling, “At the tender age of 15, I lied my way into the U.S. Army and ended up in the Philippines.”
He arrived in Manila in late October 1941 and after basic training was attached to the 31st Infantry Regiment, Philippine Division. Readers follow his odyssey through the war in the Pacific, both his movements in combat on Bataan and Corregidor, and his movements through several prisoner of war camps in the Philippines, two “hellship” voyages, and prison camps in Taiwan and Japan.
He had been a prisoner of the Japanese for almost three and a half years when he was liberated on September 9, 1945. The book also addresses decisions and events far beyond the control of the defenders of the Philippines that directly affected their chances of surviving the war.
Through the inclusion of broader context related to the heroic defense of the Philippines and its tragic aftermath, readers are provided a well-rounded treatment of the subject while gaining an enhanced understanding of the factors that led to the deaths of the over 9,000 Americans after they were taken prisoner by the Japanese in the spring of 1942.
